3000GT & Stealth Antenna Solutions !
It was recommended that I put some info about antennas into
the FAQ,
so after a couple hours searching the web & forums here's what I've found.
(NOTE: the direct URL links might be changed, you can search JCWhitney.com, Autoloc.com,
or Crutchfield.com for many different antenna models)
Replacing a broken Stock Power Antenna: The most common problem with the Stock Power Antenna is the cord that retracts the antenna breaks. This causes it to be stuck up, down, or halfway. If you can hear the motor trying to work and the antenna doesn't move, then count yourself lucky - that's the cheaper fix. You will need to replace the mast (P/N# MR282623 $25-$35 from an online dealer MitsuPartsDirect). According to a few people the dealer's quick method leaves in some of the broken parts of the tape holding the old mast. This will cause you to have problems again within a year of replacing the original broken mast. So save some money and DIY, it looks quite easy.
Instructions (both describe taking out broken pieces):
Aftermarket Replacement Options: If your entire antenna motor/assembly is shot, it will definitely be cheaper to use an aftermarket replacement. There are fully motorized units that can be purchased from $40 and up. However, you will probably see better results from an antenna that is "Amplified" (12v lead connected to increase signal reception). It is all up to your own preferences. Below are just some of the models I've come across. These are NOT your only options.
Fully Motorized:
Fixed Replacements: Many 3/S members have ditched the motorized unit for a standard fixed mount antenna. They can be found at almost all automotive parts stores, and are available in rubber or metal. One member reported substantial gains in FM reception by using an amplified rubber antenna bought at AutoZone for around $20 (AutoZone Metra Roadworks / AW-US02RA). When replacing with an amplified antenna, you will have to run a 12v wire to it (I am unsure if you can tap off of the existing power antenna wires?).

Hidden Antenna: If you don't like the look of an antenna altogether, there are a few companies that make a "Hidden" model. There are also antenna's that are built into windshields. Supposedly some 3/S models had 2 antennas, the regular one and then another that was integrated into the rear window.
How to keep your power antenna in working order: One 3Si.org member (maxel) had this tip: "mine's lasted about 116k now... I just spray a little white lithium grease on a rag and turn the radio off... light coating on it as it comes down."
Notes:
1. The antenna mounting hole size on a 3/S is 23mm, but some 3Si.org members have reported fitting in a 25mm sized antenna without any modification.
2. 3Si.org member (jdz30) reported losing his driver's side brake/tail lights after replacing the factory power antenna with a fixed aftermarket antenna. The fix was to plug/splice the two white plugs together after you unplug them from the factory antenna.3. Team3S member Dave Friedlander had these tips when working with the stock power antenna:
- There is a rubber sleeve inside the mast tube that needs to be reinserted to make everything line up properly.
- There is a small metal rod/bar at the 8 o'clock position which holds the whip against the drive gear. If it gets dislodged or lost, the unit won't work properly.
- There is also a worn drive gear which can strip the threads on the mating nylon gear.
